True Grit Western Round-Up Raises $650,000 for Broward Education Foundation Scholarships

(Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) – Cowboy hats and country music tunes filled the ballroom at the Signature Grand as more than 530 people gathered at the “True Grit: A Western Round-Up” 16th Annual Scholarship Celebration to benefit the Broward Education Foundation. More than $650,000 was raised to provide scholarships for college-bound graduates with unmet financial need.

Joseph M. Cobo, current chairman of the Foundation, and Benjamin J. Williams, chairman of the Broward County Public School Board served as honorary chairs of the event, while event co-chairs were Darrell T. Forte and Dr. Phyllis Schiffer-Simon.

“Providing scholarships to our high school seniors in need allows them to realize their full potential and gain essential post secondary education, “ said Cobo. “This scholarship fund truly makes a different in these students’ lives.”

Former local television anchor Tony Segreto served as master of ceremonies for the high-energy event that included performances by students from South Plantation High and Paula Abdul’s “Live to Dance” contest winners D’Angelo Castro, a 9-year-old Sunset Lakes Elementary student, and Amanda Carbajales,10, from Miami.

Major sponsors for the event included BECON TV, Community Blood Centers of South Florida, Pearson Digital Curriculum, Sun-Sentinel, Everest University, Broward Health, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and Center for Educational Leadership and Technology, plus more than 50 additional companies and individuals who made generous contributions toward student scholarship for this event.
